It is slender than other tern species and has black cap, strong bill and forked tail.
How does the bird appear…
In breeding plumage(summer), it has dark grey body, white cheeks and a black crown with red legs and bill.
In witer it shows white underparts and pale grey upperparts. The forehead also turns white and the remainder of the crown becomes flecked with white thus appearing grey.
Habitat: Where to find this bird?
It inhabits inland marshes, pools and lakes. It is also found at costal lagoons, tidal mudflats and estuaries, as well as rice fields and other farm fields.
It feeds on small fish, amphibians, insects and crustaceans.
Breeding & Nesting
It breeds in colonies on inland marshes. Nest is built by both male and female. Nest is a raft of vegetation that either sits on the bottom of very shallow water or floats on the surface of slightly deeper water. All duties like nest building, incubation, feeding young ones are shared by both parents.
