Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is the 1st bird sanctuary in Kerala. Dr. Salim Ali described it as the richest bird habitat on peninsular India. Several bird species can be observed here, which includes water birds & forest birds.
The sanctuary is known as Cuckoo Paradise as different varieties of cuckoos are seen here like Drongo cuckoo, Indian hawk cuckoo, Large hawk cuckoo etc.

Indian pitta is a winter visitor to the sanctuary.

- Ceylon frogmouth
- Grey-fronted green pigeon
- Red Kingfisher
- Orange Minivet
