Tawny eagle is large, handsome bird of prey. It is rather silent bird except in display.
How does the bird appear…
It has tawny (orange-brown) upperparts with black flight and tail feathers and pale lower back. It shows light coloured stripes on wings. Legs are heavily feathered.
Habitat: Where to find this bird?
It inhabits open dry habitats such as deserts, steppes, open grasslands, savannas and mountainous regions.
It feeds mainly on fresh carrion but also takes small mammals, small bird, reptile and frogs. It is also known to steal food from other raptors.
Breeding & Nesting
It breeding season varies depending on range. In India it breeds from November to August. It nests on top of tall isolated trees. Usually 1-3 eggs are laid. Incubation period is around 40-45 days. Eggs are incubated mainly by female.
