Sultan Tit is larger than most tits and also more attractive than other members of the Tit family. It is a songbird.This gregarious bird is often found in small groups.

How does the bird appear…

Both sexes are similar. It has black beak. The male has yellow forehead, crown and crest. The whole upper plumage, sides of the head and neck, chin, throat, and breast are deep black glossed with green. The outermost tail-feathers are tipped with white. Lower plumage from the breast downwards is deep yellow, the thighs barred or mottled with white. The crest is raised when the bird is alert or alarmed.

Female – Upper plumage and sides of the head are dark greenish brown. The chin and throat are shiny dark olive-green. Wings and tail are dull black. The feathers of the upper plumage edged with metallic green.

The young bird is duller and has short crest.

Habitat: Where to find this bird?

In India, this species occurs in the lower ranges of the Himalayas. It prefers light evergreen forests and forest edges.

Food

Sultan tit is omnivorous, it feeds on berries, seeds, caterpillars and insects.

Breeding & Nesting

The breeding season in India is April to July. The nest is hole in the tree.
