Ruddy Shelduck is called as Brahminy duck in India. It is nocturnal bird. It is commonly seen in pairs and rarely forms large flocks.
How does the bird appear…
Head and face are paler with short, thick black bill. Body is orange brown with black rump, flight feathers, tail coverts and tail feathers. Inner surface of feathers show patch of iridescent green feathers. Male shows dark collar during breeding season. Female is paler and lacks collar.
Habitat: Where to find this bird?
It is found near lakes, river, brackish water and saline lagoons. It is rarely seen in forested areas.
It is omnivorous. It feeds on feeds on grass, shoots, grain and water plants and also takes both aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates.
Breeding & Nesting
Breeding period is from March to April. Nest is built away from water. Nest is built in hole in tree, narrow space in cliff, ruined building etc. Nest building and incubation is done by female alone. Eggs hatch in around 28 days and chicks fledge in about 35 days.
