Rosy starling is also known as rose-coloured starling or rose-coloured pastor. It is highly gregarious and forms large noisy flocks.

How does the bird appear…

It is easily recognized by its pink body and glossy balck head, wings and tail. Legs and bill are pale orange. During breeding season male shows fine crest of elongated head feathers. Male shows duller plumage during winter.

Female have shorter crest and lack the sharp separation between pink and black.

Juveniles are paler and have short yellow bill.

Habitat: Where to find this bird?

It is found in large unforested land and open agricultural land.


It is omnivorous. It feeds on fruits, berries, flower-nectar, cereal grains and insects especially locusts and grasshoppers.

Breeding & Nesting

It breeds in large colonies. Breeding period is from May to July. Nest is built by both male and female. Eggs are incubated by both parents but mainly by female.
