Red Avadavat or Red Munia

Hindi Name: Lal munia

Red avadavat is also called as Red munia or Strawberry finch. It is popular as cage bird due to colourful plumage of male during breeding season.

How does the bird appear…

It is easy to identify with its black rounded tail and red bill. The non-breeding male is duller with red-rump while the female is duller with less of the white spotting on the feathers. Breeding male is red on most of the upper parts except for a black eye-stripe, lower belly and wings. There are white spots on the red body and wing feathers.

Habitat: Where to find this bird?

It is found in the open fields and grasslands .

Food:

It is as ground feeder. It prefers seeds, but also takes insects.

Breeding & Nesting:

It breeds during monsoon in Indian subcontinent. They build a globular nest made of grass blades.

  1. This red avadavat bird found many places in India. Eg. Rajkot( Gujarat ), Mohali ( Punjab ), Kolkata ( West Bengal), pocharam lake ( Andhra Pradesh ), manjira wildlife sanctuary ( Andhra Pradesh) etc.
