Purple Swamphen


Hindi name: Kaim /Karim /Kharim

Purple swamphen is easy identify birds with its purple plumage, red bill, red shield and large legs.

How does the bird appear…

It has purple-blue plumage with metallic gloss on throat and breast. Undertail coverts are white. Bill is red with curved upper mandible. It extends to head as bright red shield. Eyes are also red. Legs are long and pinkish with slender toes and fine claws.

Habitat: Where to find this bird?

It is frequently found near marshes with sedges.


It basically feeds on vegetarian diet though it is omnivorous. It takes shoots, leaves, roots, stems, flowers and seeds but also takes dead fish occasionally.

Breeding & Nesting

In India it breeds during June to September. Nest is a floating platform hidden in dense reeds. Nest is built by both parents. Incubation period is around of 25 days. Chicks are fed by both parents.
