Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary (West Bengal)


Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary is located on the foothills of the Himalayas, between the Teesta and Mahananda rivers. It is in the West Bengal district. The sanctuary is spread over varying elevations. The variation in altitude and forest types helps the existence of a large number of species of mammals, birds and reptiles.

Birds commonly seen

Rare birds like Rusty-bellied Shortwing, Black-breasted Parrotbill can be seen over here.
Rufous-necked Hornbill, Slender-billed Vulture , White-rumped Vulture, Lesser Kestrel, Lesser Adjutant….These are just to name a few.

Mahananda wildlife sanctuary is well connected by road with Darjeeling and Siliguri

November to April


8am to 4pm daily (sanctuary remains closed from June 16 – Sept 15)
