Little cormorant is widely distributed across Indian Subcontinent. It is gregarious bird.
How does the bird appear…
It is slightly smaller than Indian cormorant. The adult bird has black or brown-black plumage and a longish tail. Adult show a small erectile crest on the fore crown. The non breeding bird has a white patch on the throat. The webbed feet are black.
Habitat: Where to find this bird?
It is seen at both inland and coastal water bodies. It is found in village ponds, estuaries, lagoons, creeks, tidal flats, marshes, swamps, fish ponds, lakes and streams.
It forages in small loose groups. It swims underwater to catch the prey. It feeds mainly on fish.
Breeding & Nesting
It breeds from July to September in Northern India and from November to February in Southern India. Nest is platform of sticks, built by both parents. Eggs hatch after 15-21 days.
