How does the bird appear…
Bill is brownish. Facial skin is dark and is bordered with blue-grey in non-breeders and with cobalt blue in breeders. Breeding adults exhibit reddish-brown bodies and shiny bottle-green wings while non-breeders and juveniles have duller bodies. Legs are red-brown.
Habitat: Where to find this bird?
It inhabits shallow lakes, swamps and marshes, ponds, rivers, floodplains, wet meadows and irrigated agricultural fields. It is also found at coastal lagoons, mudflats and estuaries.
It is tactile forager. It locates prey items by touch as it probes the substrate with its long, curved bill. It feeds on aquatic beetles, grasshoppers, crickets, ,leeches, mollusks , crustaceans and also takes fish, amphibians, lizards, small snakes and nestling birds.
Breeding & Nesting
It breeds in colonies. It breeds between March to May. Platform shaped nest built by both parents and is placed in low vegetation. Eggs are incubated by both parents.
