Hindi Name- Chhota  kilkila

Common kingfisher is small kingfisher with wide distribution across Eurasia and North Africa. It is also known as Eurasian kingfisher or River kingfisher.

How does the bird appear…

It is small sparrow sized bird with large head and long bill. It has blue upperparts with orange underparts.

Female is similar in appearance to male except orange-red mandible with black tip.

Juveniles are similar in appearance to adult but are duller.

Habitat: Where to find this bird?

It is found near slow flowing rivers,


It feeds mainly on fish but also takes aquatic beetles and crustaceans.

Breeding & Nesting

Nest is excavated in low vertical river bank. Incubation is done by both male and female. Incubation period is of 19-20 days.
